The Concept

Trace the fascinating path of American democracy from the War of Independence, the Civil War to September 11 and beyond. From the political institutions of Washington DC, via Gettysburg and Philadelphia to New York then onto Boston.

Secondary school history students will gain an understanding of American culture and the political landscape which shaped the USA.

History

Itinerary Day By Day

DAY 1 AUSTRALIA - WASHINGTON D.C. (D)

Check in for your flight to Washington D.C. Arrive late afternoon. After exiting customs, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Dinner included.

DAY 2 WASHINGTON D.C. (B, D)

After breakfast take the metro and stop for a photo in front of the Whitehouse, followed by a visit to the National Archives where the original constitution documents are housed. During your visit participate in the Constitution in Action workshop to learn more about the application of the Constitution’s Big Ideas in real life. In the afternoon, wander between the various Smithsonian Museums on the National Mall including the African American Museum. This evening, take a Bike tour to see the illuminated monuments and War Memorials. Dinner included.

DAY 3 WASHINGTON D.C. (B, D)

Today visit the Newseum, the Congress Library and the U.S. Capitol Visitor Centre. This afternoon take the metro and enjoy a guided walking tour of Arlington National Cemetery. Witness the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Dinner included.

DAY 4 WASHINGTON D.C. – PHILADELPHIA (B, D)

Check out of your accommodation after breakfast. Depart for Philadelphia by coach. On the way, stop at Gettysburg. Enjoy a guided tour of the Battlefield and a visit to the Museum and Visitor Centre. On arrival in Philadelphia, check in to your accommodation. Dinner included.

DAY 5 PHILADELPHIA – NEW YORK (B, D)

Today explore The USA Constitution – the where and why the war on Independence occurred and the outcome. Visit the National Constitution Centre, view the Liberty Bell and see the first White House. Continue to step back in History with a visit to the Museum of the American Revolution. The Museum has George Washington’s war tent on display and is a great way to explore the war and events leading up to it. Late in the afternoon catch the train to New York. On arrival transfer to accommodation. Dinner included.

DAY 6 NEW YORK (B, D)

After breakfast, take the subway to Battery Point. Board a ferry which takes you past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. In the afternoon, visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. Time permitting explore Wall St. Dinner included.

DAY 7 NEW YORK (B, D)

After breakfast, have a half-day walking tour of New York sights. In the afternoon, make your own arrangements for sightseeing. Enjoy the view of the New York skyline from the Top of the Rock Observation Deck this evening. Dinner included.

DAY 8 NEW YORK (B, D)

Following breakfast, undertake a guided tour of the Freedom Trail and visit Fraunces Tavern Museum. This afternoon, visit either the MET or MoMA for a guided tour. Dinner included.

DAY 9 NEW YORK - BOSTON (B, D)

After Breakfast travel to Boston by coach. On arrival check in to your accommodation. Spend the afternoon sightseeing. Visit the JFK Library and Mapparium. Visit the Boston Tea Party Museum where the Sons of Liberty declared America free. Dinner included.

DAY 10 BOSTON (B, D)

After breakfast, meet your guide and depart for your combined coach and walking tour of the Freedom Trail. Begin at Boston Common and visit the State House atop Beacon Hill, Old Granary Burying Ground. Visit the Old South Meeting House and Old State House ending at the Colonial Section of Olde Boston. In the afternoon, visit Boston’s first neighbourhood, the North End (Little Italy), Paul Revere’s House and the Old North Church. Time permitting visit either Harvard, MIT or Boston College to explore the possibility of studying here. Dinner included.

DAY 11 BOSTON (B)

Check out of your accommodation after breakfast. This morning is free for your own activities. In the afternoon transfer to the airport for your flight to Australia via LA.
