The Concept

Dear Teacher,

On the 31st of October, 2017, marked 500 years since Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. This single act marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, and has had a profound effect not only on Theology but also on culture, science, business, language, politics and education.

G.E.T Educational tours are pleased to announce the launch of our 2017 Lutheran programs. Titled ‘500 years since the Reformation’, our programs feature all the key Luther historical points of interest, as well as barrier-free travel, outstanding tourism infrastructure, and a vast network of transport links to all destinations, making your visit an experience every student will remember forever.

Due to the expected high levels of interest, it is paramount that schools interested in taking students to Germany register their interest with us as soon as possible. G.E.T Educational Tours are now seeking expressions of interest for schools wishing to receive more information on our range of Luther programs throughout 2017.

We look forward to welcoming your students to Germany, the birthplace of Martin Luther!

Itinerary Day By Day

Depart Australia to Frankfurt.

On arrival, transfer by private coach to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you will have the rest of the day/night at leisure.
Dinner is provided tonight at your accommodation.

After breakfast, your guide will meet you in the lobby for a guided walking tour of Frankfurt.
The city of Frankfurt has a long and rich history, and you will visit many key sights including the City Hall and old town square, Alte Nikolai Church (built in 1290 and one of Europe’s oldest Gothic cathedrals), Klein Market Halle, and the Jewish Holocaust Memorial Wall plus much more on this 3 hour walk.
Enjoy some free time in the afternoon as you become accustomed to the northern hemisphere time zone. Dinner is provided tonight at your accommodation.

Breakfast at hotel then take the short walk to the train station for the start of your Luther Pilgrimage Tour. Your journey will first take you to Eisenach, and the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Wartburg Castle. Your 45minute guided tour is a great introduction to the Luther story, and it is here you will find the Luther Room. Explore the cell that was Martin Luther’s living space whilst he translated the New Testament into a language all Germans could understand, in just 6 months. Take your time after your tour to explore the castle and its wonderful museum and grounds.
Following your tour, walk into the town of Eisenach on the Luther trail, a leisurely 30 minute downhill stroll – but be sure to buy yourself a Bratwurst sausage in a roll beforehand from the caravan outside the castle. Follow the signposts to the other interesting Luther sights in town, such as the Luther Museum (in the house where the Luther family lived), and the house next door where the famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach grew up – it is also a fascinating museum. Once done, catch the local bus which stops right outside your accommodation.
Dinner at your accommodation (Hostel).

After breakfast make your way to the train station for your next stop: Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia. Make your way to your accommodation and after check in where your guide will meet you. There are many famous buildings and Luther sights here, and you will see them all on this fascinating tour.
Perhaps most famous of all is the Augustinian monastery where Luther served as a monk, or perhaps the magnificent St. Mary’s Cathedral, where he was ordained. The tour will also take you to visit many famous landmarks including the historical Merchant’s Bridge, the only inhabited bridge in Europe. Dinner tonight is at your accommodation.

After breakfast, take the train to Eisleben, a beautiful 2 hour trip through the German countryside. On arrival you will be picked by private coach to travel to nearby Mansfeld to visit the birthplace of Martin Luther and the museum. Return by coach to Eisleben where he died. After checking into your hotel, meet your guide at the tourist office and commence your tour of the town, learning about the early years of Luther’s life as he grew up and schooled here, visiting his old house (parts of it are still standing today) and the magnificent Luther museum across the road. A short walk up the road is St. George’s church, a rather small church which houses a magnificent painting by Lucas Cranach the Younger- definitely worth seeing. Then, head back into the town centre, and visit the cathedral where Luther performed his last sermon, as well as the place of his death and the accompanying museum adjacent to the Market Square. Dinner at accommodation.

After breakfast, continue onto Lutherstadt Wittenberg by private coach, where Martin Luther nailed his 95 these to the door of the Church castle. There is an incredible amount to see here, and your guide will meet you at the information centre for your final day on your Luther pilgrimage. Time permitting, you will see all the key sights such as the house of Lucas Cranach, Martin Luther’s family home and museum, the Town Hall, the old Lutheran Church, plus any exhibitions which you may be lucky to enjoy showing in town.
Dinner at hotel.
