The Concept

New Zealand is home to one of the world's biggest blockbuster franchises, The Lord of the Rings. This tour is the perfect mix of awe-inspiring filming locations and informative studio tours; a true 'behind the scenes' perspective of the movies. 

From Fangorn Forest and Isengard in the far South of the country, through Rivendell, and up to Hobbiton in the centre of the North Island. This tour enables students to immerse themselves in true Middle Earth, and enjoy some of the many exciting activities and local culture on offer whilst there!

Itinerary Day By Day

DAY 1 SCHOOL-CHRISTCHURCH

Fly into Christchurch and meet your guide at the airport. Transfer to the city and enjoy an orientation tour.

DAY 2 CHRISTCHURCH - TWIZEL (B)

Spend the day taking in awesome views along the road to Twizel, through the Southern Alps. Breathtaking highlights include Mount John, Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook and Lake Pukaki.

DAY 3 TWIZEL - QUEENSTOWN (B)

Explore the town of Twizel and its many filming locations, before travelling to Queenstown via Arrowtown and the Kawarau River, which served as the River Anduin in the movies.
See where the Pillars of Argonath sat marking Gondor’s border. This evening, take the Skyline Gondola for breathtaking views over Lake Wakatipu and enjoy 3 thrilling luge rides.

DAY 4 QUEENSTOWN (B)

Venture over to Glenorchy and explore the area that served as Isengard in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy on a 4WD safari. The remainder of the day will be free for project work or to explore Queenstown further.

DAY 5 QUEENSTOWN - TE ANAU (B)

Travel to Te Anau and continue onto Kepler Mire, the location used to depict Dead Marshes – the ancient battlefield outside of Mordor. Experience a mysterious underground world with a guided tour of the glowworm caves this evening.

DAY 6 TE ANAU - QUEENSTOWN (B)

Explore the real Fangorn Forest, where remote cameras were strung from high wires to film Aragorn moving through the trees. Returning to Queenstown you will have some free time for project work.

DAY 7 QUEENSTOWN - AUCKLAND (B)

Take a morning flight to Auckland where the remainder of the day will be spent exploring New Zealand’s largest city with your guide. Enjoy an orientation and a climb up Mount Eden, followed by a visit to the Skytower, for epic view of the city.

DAY 8 AUCKLAND - ROTORUA (B,D)

On your way to Rotorua, you will get to experience the real Middle Earth on a guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set. Later in the evening, enjoy an immersive Maori cultural show and an authentic Hangi dinner.

DAY 9 ROTORUA - NATIONAL PARK (B)

Visit the Wai-O-Tapu thermal wonderland before travelling to Tongariro National Park you will see the beautiful Mount Ngauruhoe, which was digitally transformed to create Mount Doom. En route you will also get to see the mighty Huka Falls in Taupō.

DAY 10 NATIONAL PARK - WELLINGTON (B)

Be treated to incredible views of Mt Ruapehu, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe on our journey south, to the capital city of Wellington. Enjoy an orientation tour on arrival as well as amazing views from Mount Victoria.

DAY 11 WELLINGTON (B)

Marvel at the huge range of original movie merchandise in the Weta Cave and see the masters at work on a tour of the Weta Workshop. This afternoon you will have a guided tour Te Papa, an internationally acclaimed cultural museum with a wealth of interactive exhibitions and displays.

DAY 12 WELLINGTON-SCHOOL (B)

Today you will visit a local school or university for a tailored educational programme and project work. Transfer to the airport this evening for the flight back to Australia.
