The Concept

Ned Kelly has had an immeasurable impact on Australian history, art and culture and an important part of the Australian school curriculum. The Ned Kelly story is one of Australia’s richest and most deeply fascinating tales and arguably the most famous story of Australian crime and punishment.

G.E.T, in conjunction with The Ned Kelly Tour and School Camp Company is offering students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in one of Australia’s most controversial, fascinating and enduring social stories, The Kelly story is presented with a balanced view – students are presented with both sides of the Kelly story, and are encouraged to reach their own conclusions. 

The Program

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

• Strong focus on the police involved in the hunt for the Kelly Gang

• Experienced, expert and knowledgeable guides, guest presenters and performers

• Full guiding and itinerary planning of your camp from start to finish

• Campfire evenings including billy tea, damper, bush stories, etc

• Disco on the last night of camp (optional)

• Visits to the famous Robert O’Hara Burke Memorial Museum in Beechworth, and the Beechworth Historical Precinct which includes the historic Beechworth Courthouse

• Tour of the town of Beveridge, which includes Ned’s birthplace, first school and church and the only surviving Kelly home, build by Ned’s father in 1859

• Full tour of the Glenrowan siege site and site of Ned’s capture

• A night tour of the Old Beechworth Gaol can be arranged

• Blacksmith demonstration

• Full tour of Beechworth township, including a stop at the lolly shop, gorge walk and the Beechworth Honey Experience

• Visit to the recently opened Ned Kelly Vault museum in Beechworth. Students will enjoy an EXCLUSIVE behind-the-scenes interactive presentation. The Ned Kelly Vault showcases the largest private collection of Kelly artefacts and associated memorabilia in the world

• Visit to the Old Melbourne Gaol and State Library of Victoria to view Ned’s original suit of armour (optional)

Itinerary Day By Day

DAY 1 MELBOURNE – BEEECHWORTH (D)

On arrival into Melbourne, meet your guide and board your private coach to begin your hunt for Ned Kelly School Camp. Arrive in Beveridge, inspect the Ned Kelly house and Beveridge township sites. Arrive at Avenel Maze, and enjoy the hunt  for clues inside the maze and ‘Meet Ned Kelly’. Afternoon tea provided. Arrive at  your accommodation, the Old Priory Guest House in Beechworth, check in and get ready for  dinner. After dinner enjoy the campfire experience, including the very exciting ‘rabbit on a shovel’ and fresh damper.

DAY 2 BEECHWORTH – GRETA- MILAWA – BEECHWORTH (B, L, D)

After breakfast, board your coach to the historic town of Glenrowan. On arrival, inspect the historic sites with your guide. Lunch at Kate’s Cottage Museum. After lunch, arrive at the Kelly homestead site and tour the Greta township site. Includes a visit to Ned’s burial site at Greta Cemetery. Stop at the Mustard shop before returning to your accommodation for some free time before dinner. After dinner, enjoy the blacksmithing demonstration  – always a favourite with the students.

DAY 3 BEECHWORTH (B, L, D)

After breakfast, walk into Beechworth township and meet your guide at the Beechworth historical precinct. Visit the Burke Museum, Courthouse and the Ned Kelly Vault. Morning tea provided. BBQ Lunch at  the town gardens, before your tour of the Beechworth Gaol Head back to your accommodation by foot via the Beechworth Lolly Shop and historic Chinese gardens and enjoy some free time before dinner. A disco can be arranged this evening after dinner.

DAY 4 BEECHWORTH – BENALLA – MELBOURNE (B, L)

After an early breakfast, check out of your accommodation and board your private coach for the  journey to Benalla. On arrival, visit the Benalla Museum to see Ned’s sash before enjoying morning tea in the Benalla Gardens. Tour the state library with your guide and view Ned Kelly’s armour, before heading to the Old Melbourne Gaol for a guided tour. Transfer on your private coach to the airport.
