The Concept

This 8-day tour is a unique opportunity to work with indigenous students in a central Australian school. Student activities include travelling on the school bus to communities, assisting with lunch and dinner preparation, and school and school yard activities. This tour includes a visit to stunning Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

This tour is suitable for students from years 7 to 12. Students will build team work and leadership skills and gain an increased understanding of indigenous culture and awareness of indigenous issues. Students will also gain understanding and appreciation of the Australian environment and geology.

The Program

Possible Activities

In the past, visiting students have been involved in the following activities:

In-class Activities

• Encouraging students to attend class on time

• Encouraging students to participate and complete classwork

• Assisting teachers where directed, such as 1:1 tutoring

• Helping nurture and model appropriate behaviours

• Modelling polite Standard Australian English

Other Activities

• Travelling on various school bus runs to collect and return students from school, (this includes visits to local town camp communities to understand where students live)

• Assisting with meal times in the dining room, as Yipirinya provides meals for its students. This may include basic food preparation activities, dining room set up and clean up and serving meals.

• Engaging students in fun, safe games and physical activities during recess and lunch

• Assisting Yipirinya staff on any off-campus excursions

Although the primary focus of this program is assisting Aboriginal students in the classroom, it provides visiting students a real snapshot into the lives of Central Australian students.

Following the time at Yipirinya, you have the option of furthering your experience of Central Australia, by visiting Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (3days/2 nights).
